Overview of the English and Film Program

Introduction
The English and Film degree program explores the relationship between literature and film, examining how they reflect the social and historical contexts in which they were written. Students will learn about both art forms individually and in relation to each other, developing their critical analysis skills and understanding of the cultural and creative impact of film.
Year One Modules
- Critical Approaches to Film: Evaluates a range of critical approaches to film in relation to social and cultural developments.
- Popular Fictions: Introduces key concepts relating to the study of popular fiction, including critical attitudes and the publishing industry.
- Film Form, Film Meaning: Examines the idea of film form and its contribution to the meaning of a film.
- Classical Hollywood Cinema: Introduces the concept of 'classical Hollywood' cinema and its role in the development of film.
- Discovering Literature: Explores the importance of writing and storytelling in literature from different approaches, forms, and periods.
Year Two Modules
- British Cinema: Introduces students to key directors, on-screen talent, genres, cycles, and movements associated with British cinema.
- Choose from two Film and three English modules: Options include Film Journalism, Cinema Asia, Comedy and British Cinema, Contemporary American Cinema, The Romantic Period, Analysing Media Texts, Literature, Adaptation and the Screen, Victorian Literature, 21st Century Women's Writing, The Female Gothic, and Introduction to Screenwriting.
Year Three Modules
- Postmodernism: Explores a range of post-war and 21st-century texts and links them with debates around the nature of postmodernism.
- Choose three Film and two English options: Options include Sequential Art, Hollywood Masculinities, Film Programming and Curating for Cinemas and Festivals, Alternative, Independent, and Marginal Film, Film and Theory, British Theatre Post-1950, Biography, Health Communication, Post/Colonial African Literature, Alternative Ulster, and Dissertation.
Teaching and Assessment
- Teaching: Combination of lectures, seminars, and tutorials.
- Assessment: Variety of methods, including traditional essays, presentations, written analyses, and longer pieces based on research interests.

Requirements

- Standard Entry Requirements:
- GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above.
- GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above (preferred but not essential).
- 104-120 UCAS Tariff Points.
- A-Level, T-Level, BTEC National Diploma, Access to HE, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, and International Baccalaureate qualifications accepted.
- IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5 for international students.
