This module will explore current evidence underpinning normal childbirth, strategic changes necessary in services to increase normal birth rates, problem-solving strategies, autonomous practice, and a holistic approach to care.

- Critical understanding of physiology
- Specific clinical skills related to the care of women during normal childbirth
What will I be doing?
The course is delivered through interactive lectures, seminars, videos, discussion, case scenarios, reflective practice, and individual tutorial support.
Assessment
- 30-minute seminar (40%)
- 3,000-word essay (60%)

This module can be taken as a standalone for continuing professional development. On completion, you will have the confidence to practice autonomously and apply a holistic approach to your care. The course can also be taken as part of our MSc Midwifery.

Requirements
What you need to know
The course is aimed at midwives and other healthcare professionals interested in exploring and promoting normal birth and challenging the medicalisation of birth.
Entry Requirements
- Previous study and experience: BSc Midwifery or related degree, normally at 2:2 or higher, or evidence of recent level 6 study.
- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL): We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.
