Introduction

This course is for you if you want to develop your sense of creativity, learn how to analyse and refine your own work, and launch a professional career in writing. You will have the chance to explore writing in a range of contexts, from screenwriting to the gaming industry, and develop a strong portfolio of varied work.


Year One

  • Essential Reporting: Learn how to source and produce stories, providing you with fundamental editorial and technical skills.
  • Multimedia Reporting: Develop as a networked journalist by developing your own blog and exploring digital platforms.
  • Production Skills: Combine technical and creative aspects of media production.
  • Popular Fictions: Explore key concepts fundamental to the study of popular fiction.
  • The Writer's Practice: Experiment with your talents and discover your own writing practice.

Year Two

  • Choose six of the following modules:

    • Feature Writing
    • Theatre Industry: Critical Writing and Contemporary Debates

Year Three

  • Final Portfolio: Undertake a self-directed project in the genre(s) of your choosing.
  • Choose five of the following optional modules:

Teaching

  • Lectures: Formal, with a lecturer addressing a large group of students.
  • Tutorials: Informal, consisting of small group teaching that is often student-led.
  • Seminars: Informal, with a mixture of tutor-led and student-led discussions.
  • Practical workshops: Demonstrate new skills, with outside speakers sometimes invited to share their experiences.
  • Creative writing workshops: One-to-one support, including feedback from tutors on your work.

Assessment

  • Production and creative writing modules are typically assessed through creative work.
  • Other modules are evaluated through essays.
  • No exams as part of this course.

Employment and Stats

  • 90% of graduates are in work or doing further study 15 months after the course.

Requirements

  • GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is required.
  • Maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) is preferred but not essential.
  • UCAS Tariff Points: 104-112.
  • A level: 104-112 UCAS Tariff Points to be obtained from a minimum of two A-Levels or equivalent.
  • T level: Merit.
  • BTEC National Diploma: DMM.
  • Scottish Highers: 104-112 points.
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 104-112 points.
  • International Baccalaureate: 30-31 points.
  • European Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 71% overall.

Tuition Fees

  • Full-time home: £9,535 per year (2025/26), £9,535 per year (2026/27).
  • Full-time international: £17,650 per year (2025/26), £18,120 per year (2026/27).
