Outline:
Program Duration:
2 years
Program Attendance:
100% online
Program Start Dates:
September, January, and May
Program Structure:
The program consists of 120 credits, split into 8 core modules.
Core Modules:
- Advanced Sensors: This module provides an understanding of the principles and technology of analytical measurement systems, limitations of accuracy, and operational requirements of analytical sensor elements. Students will also explore modern generations of sensor systems based on microprocessors, application-specific integrated circuits, and microcontrollers.
- Control: This module explores control system design techniques for Single Input Single Output (SISO) continuous systems using both classical control theory and state space methods. Students will develop practical techniques of creating and simulating linear and dynamic models, and will be introduced to non-linear systems and models.
- Digital Control and Instrumentation: This module covers modern processes and products heavily reliant on digital control and instrumentation systems for safe, efficient, and economical operation. Students will develop their knowledge of discrete-time computer-based control systems, digital control, signal processing, industrial informatics, and related components and software.
- Project (BEng Tech): This extended module allows students to independently investigate an area of engineering and further develop their research and application skills. Through keynote lectures and self-managed independent study, students will learn to effectively write technical reports, conduct research, and create and present their findings.
- Sustainable Systems and Industry 4.0: This module explores the emergence of Industry 4.0, focusing on advancing automation, decentralization, and system integration. Students will learn how machines can communicate, collect information, and make informed decisions through artificial intelligence, big data, and the industrial internet of things. Additionally, they will dive into the ethical and sustainable aspects of Industry 4.0 and learn how to adopt or implement the latest technologies ethically and sustainably.
Assessment:
Assessment methods in the program include exams, in-course assessments, project work, oral presentations, and poster presentations. The specific weightings of each assessment method will vary depending on the module.
Teaching:
The program is delivered through a virtual learning environment (VLE), allowing students to access lectures, seminars, course materials, and interact with their tutors and classmates online. The program's faculty are experienced professionals in the field of instrumentation and control engineering, and are dedicated to providing students with a high-quality learning experience.
Careers:
Graduates of this program have the potential to pursue careers in a variety of engineering industries, including automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, marine, medical, rail, power, processing, chemical, oil and gas, and food production.
Other:
- Students can use the progress bar in the VLE to track their progress through the modules and gain a sense of achievement.
