Optometry MOptom (Hons)
Overview
Optometrists are the healthcare professionals responsible for the examination, diagnosis, and management of the visual system. Optometry is a contemporary, developing field which is progressing with advances in research and equipment, and graduates are highly employable professionals with opportunities to work in a variety of settings.
Course Structure
The course includes an integrated master's - you study three years at undergraduate level and one year at postgraduate level.

How You Learn
The course has a diverse range of learning and teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, group discussions, hands-on sessions, and clinical placements.
How You Are Assessed
Assessments include written assignments, written and practical exams, presentations, and pass/fail reflective logbooks.
Entry Requirements
- Minimum of 128 UCAS points, equivalent to two B's and one A at A-level, in at least two science subjects.
- An enhanced DBS will be required, with active encouragement for enrolment onto the update service linked to DBS.
- An English Language Testing System (IELTS) of at least level 7 overall (with no individual section lower than 6.5) is acceptable, or equivalent.
Employability
A career in optometry is varied and fulfilling, with career paths including private practice, hospital optometry, domiciliary optometry, third sector, and research and teaching.
Work Placement
Teesside University aims to produce confident clinicians who are future-ready for optometric practice. You are introduced to clinical practice from early in Year 1, with a 42-week work placement in collaboration with the College of Optometrists in Year 4.
