Program Overview
Artificial Intelligence (MSc)
Overview
The MSc Artificial Intelligence programme at Queen's University Belfast is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and techniques of artificial intelligence. The programme covers a range of topics, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and knowledge engineering.
Course Structure
The programme is available in both full-time and part-time options. The full-time option is completed in one year, while the part-time option is completed in two years. The programme consists of six taught modules and a research dissertation.
Modules
- Knowledge Engineering: This module covers the fundamental principles and techniques of knowledge engineering, including logic, ontology, and knowledge graphs.
- Natural Language Processing: This module covers the basics of natural language processing, including lexical, syntactic, semantic, and discourse representations.
- Machine Learning: This module covers the core concepts of machine learning, including linear regression, classification, and clustering.
- Computer Vision: This module covers the principles and techniques of computer vision, including image acquisition, representation, and processing.
- Themed Research Project: This module allows students to work on a research project in a specific area of artificial intelligence, such as machine learning, natural language processing, or computer vision.
- Foundations of AI: This module covers the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence, including probability, statistics, calculus, and linear algebra.
- Artificial Intelligence for Health: This module covers the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including precision medicine, medical imaging, and drug discovery.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles and techniques of artificial intelligence
- Apply artificial intelligence techniques to solve real-world problems
- Evaluate and compare the performance of different artificial intelligence algorithms
- Design and implement artificial intelligence systems
- Communicate complex artificial intelligence concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
Assessment
Assessment is based on coursework, including assignments, projects, and presentations. There are no exams.
