Entry Requirements:


For the MA in Art History:

  • Bachelor's degree in Art History or a related field.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
  • A strong statement of purpose outlining your research interests and career goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors or other academic professionals familiar with your work.
  • A writing sample, such as a research paper or a thesis chapter.

For the PhD in Art History:

  • Master's degree in Art History or a related field.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 and a minimum master's GPA of 3.7.
  • A strong statement of purpose outlining your research interests and career goals.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors or other academic professionals familiar with your work.
  • However, the program recommends that students have a strong reading knowledge of at least one foreign language relevant to their area of study.
  • For the PhD in Art History: Students must demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages relevant to their area of study.
  • One language must be French or German, and the other language can be chosen from a variety of options. The program offers language exams to assess proficiency.
  • The Department of Art History also offers an interdepartmental concentration in Museum and Exhibition Studies.
