Program Overview


This five-year Mathematics program offers a comprehensive curriculum with a focus on research training and advanced mathematical skills. Students spend their third year abroad, gaining international experience and contributing to their final degree grade. Outline:


Year One:

  • Most modules are compulsory.
  • Students can choose modules in Mechanics or Finance.
  • The modules cover Calculus, Algebra, Analysis, Computing, and Statistics.
  • Students can replace some math modules with language modules if they plan to study in a non-English speaking country.
  • Requires a 50% average to continue.

Year Two:

  • 80 credits are core and 40 credits are optional.
  • Optional modules cover Pure and Applied mathematics, Statistics, and Operational Research.

Year Three:

  • Spent at a university abroad.
  • Typical destinations include Canada, Australia, USA, and various European countries.
  • Students still qualify for student loans.
  • Tuition fee is only 15% of usual fee.
  • Marks are converted to UK marks and contribute 80% of the year's mark.
  • The remaining 20% is based on a presentation and viva exam upon return.

Year Four:

  • No core modules.
  • Modules focus on research interests of the School.
  • 120 credits of optional modules are chosen.
  • At least 50% of modules should be in Operational Research or Statistics.
  • Students can choose to graduate with a BSc degree at the end of Year Four.

Year Five:

  • Focuses on research training and advanced mathematical skills.
  • Includes a major project.
  • Optional modules available in Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Operational Research.

Assessment:

  • Assessment methods include closed book written examinations, continuous assessments, and project work.
  • Continuous assessment may involve problem-solving exercises, written reports, computer programs, and oral presentations.
  • Students can review their examination scripts and discuss performance with the lecturer.
  • Major research project is assessed through a written report and an oral examination.
  • Pass mark is 40%.
  • Students can only progress to resit if they have failed no more than 60 credits.
  • They can progress to the following year if they have failed no more than 20 credits.
  • Final degree grade is based on:
  • 10% from Year Two studies
  • 10% from Year of Study Abroad
  • 30% from Year Four
  • 50% from Year Five

Teaching:

  • Core knowledge is taught through lectures, exercises, small-group tutorials, and guided study.
  • Year five lectures take the form of seminars.
  • Students receive regular feedback through class discussions, written comments on submitted work, and review of problem solutions.
  • The University offers various support services, including the Careers Service and the Disability and Dyslexia Service.

Careers:

Fees for home status

The University reserves the right to increase tuition fees in the second and subsequent years of a course as permitted by law or Welsh Government policy. Where applicable we will notify you of any change in tuition fee by the end of June in the academic year before the one in which the fee will increase.

During a sandwich year (e.g. year in industry, placement year or year abroad) a lower fee will apply.


Additional costs

For the Study Year Abroad, students are entitled to their normal Student Loan and the tuition fee is only 15% of the normal fee. Students need to consider additional costs such as airfares, health insurance etc. but this would be made clear to students before they finalise their overseas university. The Global Opportunities Centre offers support towards airfares of between £500 and £700. For exchange partners within the EU, the Erasmus scheme offers financial support. Students should note that living costs in other countries may be higher than the cost of living in the UK. Health insurance will also be required.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:


UK A-level:

  • AAA-AAB, including a grade A in Mathematics.
  • Extended/International Project Qualification: Applicants with grade A in the EPQ/IPQ will typically receive an offer one grade lower than the standard offer.
  • Please note that any subject specific requirements must still be met.

International Baccalaureate:

  • 36-34 overall or 666 in 3 HL subjects.
  • Must include a grade 6 in HL Maths or Maths Analysis and Approaches.

Baccalaureate Wales:

  • From September 2023, the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (level 3) will replace the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate).
  • This qualification will be accepted in lieu of one A-Level (at the grades listed above), excluding any specified subjects.

English Language or Welsh Language:

  • GCSE Grade C/4 or an equivalent (such as A-levels).
  • We do not accept Critical Thinking, General Studies, Citizenship Studies, or other similar equivalent subjects.

BTEC:
