Cranfield University’s MSc in Counterterrorism

Program Description:

The MSc in Counterterrorism is a rigorous, evidence-based program that covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • The root causes of terrorism.

Outline:


Part 1: Taught Modules (60%)

The taught modules are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in the theory and practice of counterterrorism. The modules are taught by experts in the field and are designed to be interactive and engaging.


Module 1: Strategies, Tactics, Ideologies & Causes of Terrorism

This module examines the drivers and decision-making behind terrorist tactics, strategies, and target selection. The module will make use of Cranfield’s explosives and firearms facilities to examine different types of terrorist tactics, looking into the role of ideology and other factors, as well as the impact of countermeasures on the evolution of terrorist strategies. The module will also consider possible future trends in terrorist tactics and strategy.


Module 2: Understanding Terrorism & Counter-terrorism

This module introduces students to the fundamental debates relating to terrorism and counterterrorism. It will address a range of key issues, including definitions, root causes, history & evolution, and major theories. This module will also introduce students to the research methods and data analysis used to understand and assess terrorism and counterterrorism.


Module 3: Applied Counterterrorism

This module provides students with an evidence-based understanding of the history and modern nature of counterterrorism. The module will focus on different forms and arenas of counterterrorism and will provide a critical assessment of the effectiveness and flaws of different CT strategies and tactics. The module will also focus attention on several detailed case studies to illustrate the role and impact of counterterrorism policies and practices, and the lessons that can be learnt from them.

Entry Requirements


For all applicants:

  • A first or second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g.
  • criminology, law, politics, psychology, forensic science, etc) or the professional equivalent.
  • Students with other degrees who can show a knowledge of and interest in the elements of the subject will also be considered.

Additional Requirements for EU Students:

Additional Requirements for International Overseas Students Outside the EU:

  • Applicants must meet the English language requirements as outlined below.

Please note:

Some Cranfield University courses are delivered at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, Shrivenham which is a Ministry of Defence (MoD) site. All applicants to courses that are wholly or partially delivered at Shrivenham must complete the BPSS (HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard V4 April 2014) prior to registration on the course or must already hold a security clearance to this level or higher.


Language Proficiency Requirements


All applicants must meet the following English language requirements:

  • IELTS Academic: 7.0 overall and 5.5 in all skill components
  • TOEFL iBT: 100 total and minimum skill component scores of 18 reading, 17 listening, 20 speaking and 17 writing.
  • Cambridge Assessment English: Cambridge English Scale score of 190 overall and 160 in all skill components.
  • Duolingo: 130 overall and minimum subscores of 105 literacy, 110 comprehension, 95 conversation and 85 production.
  • Kaplan Test of English: 505 overall and 410 in all skill components.
  • LanguageCert: 75 overall and 60 in all skill components.
  • Password Skills Plus: 7.0 overall and 5.5 in all skill components.
  • Pearson PTE: 68 overall and 59 in all skill components.
  • Trinity College London: Integrated Skills in English - ISE III (C1) - Overall Pass outcome.

Note:

Applicants who do not already meet the English language entry requirement can apply for one of the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses.
