Degree Overview:
This standalone module provides students with a background in ocular pharmacology. Through lectures, online tests, and an evidence-based essay, students gain expertise in topics including:
- Ocular immunology and microbiology
- Pharmacology, specifically related to ocular therapeutic drugs
- Prescribing, safety, and cost-effectiveness in ophthalmic medication
- Shared decision-making in prescribing
- Legal, ethical, and professional frameworks for prescription
Assessment:
Students' knowledge of ocular pharmacology is evaluated through two key methods:
- Coursework: An evidence-based essay examining the use of ophthalmic drugs.
- Online tests: Multiple assessments conducted after each lecture to ensure comprehension.
Teaching:
This module is delivered entirely via distance learning through a virtual learning environment called Blackboard. Students have access to comprehensive study materials, scientific journals, and e-journals through this platform. - Students who have already completed the "Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics" or "Prescribing for Disorders of the Eye" modules are ineligible.
- The program runs online and requires a time commitment of up to 200 hours in total, although individual needs may vary.
- The course fee for the 2024/25 cycle is £1,300. However, it provides 20 credits towards the Aston University's MSc Clinical Optometry program or other postgraduate courses at the discretion of the program director.
