Career Switcher Program


Degree Overview:

The Career Switcher Program is designed for individuals who hold a Bachelor’s degree and have at least three years of full-time work experience but do not have a teaching certification. The program provides an alternative pathway into teaching for these individuals, offering them the opportunity to switch careers and become certified teachers in Virginia. The program consists of two phases:

  • Phase I: This phase focuses on teaching fundamentals and includes topics such as curriculum, instruction, assessment, teaching with technology, classroom management, and more.
  • It also involves a 40-hour practicum field experience in participating school systems. Upon successful completion, participants receive a Phase I Certificate of Completion and the VDOE reviews their credentials for a Provisional License.
  • Phase II: Participants must secure full-time or half-time employment with a public or state-approved private school in Virginia.
  • During this first year of teaching, they work with a mentor teacher, meet for additional professional development, and receive support and guidance. Upon successful completion of Phase II, participants receive a full 10-year renewable teaching license.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

The Shenandoah University Career Switcher program has several prerequisites that applicants must satisfy before being accepted into the program. These prerequisites include:


Bachelor’s Degree: Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university.

Transcripts must be submitted and arrive in sealed/stamped envelopes from the issuing institution’s Registrars Office.


Experience: Applicants must have three years of full-time work experience or its equivalent.

This experience should be documented and submitted on the Report on Experience Form(s).


Praxis Subject Assessment: Applicants must pass the Praxis Subject Assessment in the subject area they wish to teach.

This test measures knowledge of the subject matter and has specific test identifiers recognized by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Check the VDOE website for a complete list of test identifiers.


Virginia Communications and Language Assessment (VCLA): Applicants must pass both the reading and writing sections of the VCLA test.

This general test does not have a mathematics component and is available in paper and electronic versions. Sample tests can be downloaded from both the VCLA and ETS websites.


Resume: Applicants must submit an up-to-date resume showcasing their work experience and skills.


Criminal Background Check: Applicants must undergo a criminal background check through Shenandoah University.

This includes a Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) check. Applicants will be notified about this additional check.

  • International students whose Bachelor's degree was earned outside the USA must have their transcript evaluated by an accreditation agency approved by the VDOE.
  • Applicants with any concerns regarding their criminal background check should contact the Coordinator of Extended and Distance Education before applying.
  • Applicants may apply for educational loans through private lending sources.
