The program focuses on developing practical skills, knowledge, and understanding of art and design, as well as the ability to think critically about the subject and its role in society.

- The subject study/subject education strand: This strand builds upon the student's existing expertise in art and design and provides the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and understanding of art and design in the secondary school context.
- The education and professional studies strand: This strand gives students a thorough understanding of the learning process, including an appreciation of individual differences. It also covers the principles and practices of learning and teaching, supported by analytical skills.
- The school placements/professional practice strand: This strand is designed to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive as creative, informed, and critical professionals. It includes school-based training, where students will spend at least 120 days in schools, and the opportunity to engage in target-setting, action-planning, and reflection.
