Degree Overview:

The MSc Engineering Programme aims to broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of a variety of engineering subjects, supporting career development and progression. It is designed for engineers working in the energy industry and is delivered online.


Objectives:

  • Provide Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities for engineers.
  • Allow engineers to tailor a program specific to their role, career ambitions, or area of interest.
  • Help engineers gain certification for their CPD efforts and develop the knowledge and understanding to make an impact in their field.

Outline:

The MSc Engineering Programme allows you to apply for any module in our wide selection of Online Learning degrees, offered by the School of Engineering. Some modules may have prerequisites over and above the standard qualifications for entry. Each module can be completed individually as a personal development opportunity. Three awards are available:

  • Master of Science Engineering (8 modules plus a project)
  • Postgraduate Diploma Engineering (8 modules)
  • Postgraduate Certificate Engineering (4 modules)

Course Schedule:

  • Students working towards the MSc will typically take up to 3 modules per year.
  • Each module comprises up to 60 hours of online delivery over 12 weeks of teaching.
  • The assessment component of the module is submitted within or at the end of these 12 weeks.

Individual Modules:

  • Detailed information about each module is available online (link provided in the text).
  • Modules and delivery order may change for operational purposes.

Assessment:

  • The assessment component of each module is submitted within or at the end of each 12 weeks block of teaching.
  • Each module will be assessed by a closed book examination or written assignment or a combination of both.
  • The number of assessments students will undertake over a year will depend on the number of modules taken.

Teaching:

  • Learning Methods: Students engage with tutors and peers using the virtual learning environment CampusMoodle.
  • All learning materials are available online 24/7.
  • Activity Summary:
  • Lectures - 2.5 hours per week – combination of online participation and private study over a 12 week period
  • Project Supervision - 15 hours per week
  • Independent study - 150 hours of online participation and private study per 15 credit module over a 12 week period
  • Teaching Staff: The teaching staff members bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the curriculum.
  • They are research-active and work on live industry projects, including input to patented technology and the design of products and systems.

  • Companies seeking a tailored set of modules to suit the training needs of their employees
  • The duration of the MSc Engineering course varies from 15 weeks to 6 years, in which the opportunity to receive the necessary skills are obtained.
  • A significant portion of this course is underpinned by independent learning, and you will be expected to be responsible for managing your coursework, reading and other learning activities appropriately.
  • Significant additional private study is expected during each module.
  • The University regularly reviews its courses.
  • Course content and structure may change over time.
  • We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of submission of coursework.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:

Applicants normally hold a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in Engineering or a relevant discipline such as Geology, Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics. Applicants with a lower degree classification and / or relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.


Language Proficiency Requirements:

Applicants whose first language is not English should have an IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5, or an equivalent.
