Program Overview

This mathematics minor program provides a solid foundation in calculus, mathematical structures, and discrete mathematics. Students can tailor their studies by selecting advanced courses in various areas of mathematics, including 200-, 300-, and 400-level topics. The program prepares students for careers in fields that require mathematical knowledge and analytical skills.

Program Outline

Outline:

Required Courses:

  • MAT 131 Calculus I (4 Credits): This course covers fundamental concepts of differential and integral calculus, including limits, continuity, derivatives, integrals, and applications.
  • MAT 132 Calculus II (4 Credits): Building upon Calculus I, this course delves into advanced topics like sequences, series, multivariable calculus, and applications.
  • MAT 233 Mathematical Structures and Models (4 Credits): This course explores abstract mathematical concepts, including sets, functions, relations, logic, and mathematical modeling.
  • OR MAT 137 Introduction to Discrete Mathematics (4 Credits): This course introduces students to concepts in discrete mathematics, including logic, proofs, set theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and algorithms.
  • Obtain department chair approval to select two of the following (16-8 Credits):
  • MAT 200 level courses:
  • Various courses covering advanced topics in mathematics at the 200 level.
  • MAT 300 level courses: A wide range of courses in mathematics at the 300 level, focusing on more specialized areas.
  • MAT 400 level courses: Advanced, specialized mathematics courses at the 400 level, often delving into research-oriented topics.

Total Credits:

18-20 credits

Notes:

  • Appropriate substitutions: The Mathematics Department Chair or Associate Chair may approve substitutions for specific courses.
  • MAT 260: This course does not count towards the 200+ level course requirement for the mathematics minor.
  • Required 200+ level course: At least one of the 200+ level courses must be one of the following: MAT 236, MAT 238, or MAT 253.
