BSc (Hons) Environmental Science

We only have one planet. Our number one challenge is to work out how we can live within the boundaries this presents while ensuring the health and wellbeing, not only of the current human population and generations to come, but of the 8.7 million species that cohabit it with us.


Our Environmental Science degree is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to develop as an environmental practitioner and to develop the personal attributes required to take on this challenge.


Course Overview

Our programme is purpose built for the modern environmental scientist and centred around the learner as the 'environmental practitioner'. You will develop skills, knowledge and understanding that will equip you for employment in a wide range of environmental professions and beyond. It has been aligned to subject benchmark statements and has been developed in consultation with employers.


You will develop an understanding of the science of the environment, how to assess and monitor environmental issues and identify sustainable solutions to current environmental problems as well as ensure future environmental protection.


The Environmental Science course has a strong practical focus with laboratory and field work throughout including a residential field trip and a multi-year practical monitoring exercise, allowing you to combine theory and practice.

What you will learn

How you will learn

Throughout your study on the programme, you will learn through a variety of different activities. Tuition fees are set annually and are subject to review each year. The University may therefore raise tuition fees in the second or subsequent years of a course, in line with inflation and/or the maximum permitted by law or Government policy. We have a wide range of scholarships, bursaries, grants and funds available to support you throughout your studies with us. This includes the Cumbria Bursary - a non-repayable bursary designed to support first year students with a household income of less than £25,000.

Additional Costs

There will be some additional costs associated with the course including stationery, textbooks, field trips and membership fees although some of these features are optional.


Books are reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change, course welcome information will provide you with an indicative list for the year.


Books and Journals

The University library holds copies of core texts (including e-books accessible online) for students to borrow. Some students may want to purchase their own books. Alternatively, journals (a large number of which will be available electronically through the university library resources) will enable students to source the most up to date research.


Stationery

You may want to purchase stationery for your own personal use (pens, papers and folders, etc.). Whilst you will choose how much you need, typically students choose to pay around £30 - £40 per year for these.


Clothing and Equipment

Fieldwork is a key component of the programme with a number of modules including half/full day local trips and visits. You will be expected to have appropriate outdoor clothing to participate in these activities (warm and waterproof clothing, small ruck sack, sturdy and waterproof footwear). Any specialist equipment required will be provided.


Other

In addition, the programme will include a residential field trip in the second year for which you may need to make a small additional contribution to costs of travel depending upon the field location and you may need to pay for your own food where catering is not provided. The University will usually pay all costs associated with other field trips.
