Module - Emergency Care of Women and Children Level 7
Overview
This module aims to facilitate development of your knowledge and critical understanding of the normal physiology of the child and the pregnant woman; the application of clinical management; and assessment skills in emergency situations pertaining to obstetric, neonatal and paediatric service users, taking into account the family care context.
Objectives
- Apply an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of the normal anatomy and physiology of the child and their normal developmental stages and landmarks.
- Critically evaluate and apply the underlying principles of assessment and recognition of a sick child to demonstrate understanding of the evidence-based management of paediatric emergencies.
- Apply knowledge and critical understanding of the anatomy, physiology of normal pregnancy and labour to the assessment and management of obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
- Demonstrate the ability to adapt interpersonal communication methods for caring for these patient groups, their families including partnership working in a transdisciplinary approach, critically evaluating scope of practice, and the need for referral.
- Critically analyse how learning from this module has transformed your understanding of your practice.

Teaching and Assessment
How You Will Learn
The module will run online via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Blackboard.
How You Will Be Assessed
- The formative assessment is a practical skills assessment with oral exposition, lasting 1 hour.
- The summative assessment is a written assignment of 3,500 words.
Entry Requirements
The standard academic entry requirements for level 7 study are successful completion of a degree or prior study at level 6 or 7.
