Program Overview

The Absence Management module equips students with knowledge and skills to manage workplace sickness absence. It covers causes, financial implications, key processes, and professional standards. Delivered through blended learning, the module aligns with industry guidance and prepares students for careers in occupational health.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The aim of the Absence Management (HPHO6094) module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage sickness absence in the workplace.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge and systematic critical understanding of the causes of sickness absence and the financial implications at organisational and national levels, with reference to primary research and national survey data.
  • Have a detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the key processes used to manage sickness absence including the case management approach and the pivotal role of occupational health (OH) in managing these processes, highlighting where professional or ethical dilemmas could occur.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of professional standards when undertaking a sickness absence review in the context of a complex assessment.
  • Critically examine the evidence base on which OH advice is provided to managers in relation to a common cause of sickness absence, using a range of published media.

Teaching:

The module is delivered through blended learning, with substantial online engagement, to meet the needs of learners in a range of contexts. The module has been planned in the light of the Royal College of Nursing (2011) Occupational Health Career and Competence Development Guidance, and Dame Carol Black's (2008) report Working for a Healthier Tomorrow.
