Course Overview
The PGCE in Secondary Biology with QTS (11-16) is a program that inspires the next generation of scientists by sharing a passion for Biology with young people. This specialized pathway allows individuals to instill a love of Biology within the children they teach. Our well-respected PGCE Secondary with QTS supports students through their journey from student to Early Career Teacher (ECT). Moreover, as the PGCE program includes QTS, students can apply for their first teaching position while studying with us.

Course Structure
- PGSC7011: Investigating Teaching and Learning in Biology Explore concepts and structures within Biology in-depth, along with the connections between key subject themes.
- PGSC7012: Investigating Teaching and Learning Across and Beyond the School Curriculum Develop a secure understanding of the curriculum and the ways in which practitioners can contribute to the school community.
- PGSC9011: Developing Professional Skills, Knowledge, and Practice Draw together your school-based experiences and achieve your QTS.
Teaching and Assessment
- As a student at the University of Cumbria, you are part of an inclusive learning community that recognizes diversity. You will have opportunities to learn by interacting with others in a collegiate, facilitative, and dynamic learning environment.
- Assessment loosely follows two forms; summative and formative.
Minimum Entry Requirements
- 2:2 or above in a Biology degree.
- GCSE English Language or Literature, and GCSE Maths at grade C/4.
- Satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) background clearance check and Occupational Health check prior to starting the course.
- Satisfactory academic (University) reference, or, a satisfactory professional reference if it is more than 3 years since academic study.

- A strong personal statement conveying an enthusiasm for the subject, for working with young people, and for teaching and learning.
- Graduates with a 2:2 or above degree classification.

- Funding: We have a wide range of scholarships, bursaries, grants, and funds available to support students throughout their studies with us.
- Student Finance: Most applicants are eligible for student finance support provided by the UK government. This support includes a loan that covers all of their tuition fee, as well as a maintenance loan, which takes into account their personal situation to provide the support they need to live comfortably whilst on their course.
