Introduction to NEC3
The New Engineering Contract (NEC) is a family of contracts created by the Institution of Civil Engineers that help apply good project management principles and practices, and define legal relationships.
Course Overview
The course is aimed at participants working in commercial and contracting areas and others who require an insight into the NEC3 contract. It is recommended that participants have experience working in the commercial environment in which the NEC contracts operate, and/or have previously attended Introduction to Commercial, Contracts and Supply.

Course Structure
What You Will Learn
The Introduction to NEC3 short course provides participants with an overview of NEC3 with a particular focus on the Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) and its key options and clauses. Participants will develop an understanding of the contracts origins and key philosophy, and explore how the contract is used within the project environment.

- The use of NEC3 in the project environment
- Main options and clauses of NEC3
- Dealing with changes within NEC3
Teaching & Assessment
How You Will Learn
Our Introduction to NEC3 short course can be delivered either online (via Zoom) over two half-day sessions, or face-to-face over one day.

The course includes a variety of interactive exercises and maximises opportunities for discussion, networking and collaboration.
Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, reflections, and experiences throughout the course with an emphasis on how the learning can be seen in and applied to the workplace environment.
How You Will Be Assessed
Participants will complete a 30-minute open-book multiple-choice assessment at the end of the course.
The assessment has been designed to consolidate the key learning points from the course, and all questions will be linked to the learning on the day.
Entry Requirements
It is recommended that participants have experience working in the commercial environment in which the NEC contracts operate, and/or have previously attended the Introduction to Commercial, Contracts and Supply course.
Fees & Funding
Tuition Fees
2025 - 2026
Tuition fees are set annually and are subject to review each year. The University may therefore raise tuition fees in the second or subsequent years of a course, in line with inflation and/or the maximum permitted by law or Government policy. Students will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.
Funding
We have a wide range of scholarships, bursaries, grants and funds available to support you throughout your studies with us. This includes the Cumbria Bursary - a non-repayable bursary designed to support first year students with a household income of less than £25,000.
