Program Overview


Introduction to the Direct Matriculation: International Studies B.A./M.A. Program

The Johns Hopkins University offers an accelerated, consecutive degree program in collaboration with the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) located in Washington, D.C. This program is known as the Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts Direct Matriculation Program (BA/MA DMP) and follows a 3+2 model.


Eligibility and Admission Criteria

To be eligible for the SAIS BA/MA DMP, students must indicate their interest in the program on their admissions application to the university and complete the Direct Matriculation: International Studies supplemental form by the application deadline. Students are accepted into the BA/MA DMP upon admission to the university. In years where capacity allows, Johns Hopkins University may also offer admission to the SAIS BA/MA program to qualified first-semester sophomore International Studies or Political Science majors.


Program Requirements

Students admitted to the SAIS BA/MA DMP must complete specific required courses while at Homewood, including:


  • Macroeconomics
  • Microeconomics
  • A statistics course They must also maintain a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.5 to remain eligible for the program.

Progress toward the B.A./M.A. Degree

SAIS BA/MA DMP consecutive degree students typically complete most of their undergraduate degree requirements at Homewood during the first three years and then pursue their Master of Arts at SAIS during the fourth and fifth years. There are options for where students can spend their years at SAIS:


  • They may decide to spend both years at the SAIS campus in Washington, D.C., at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center.
  • Alternatively, they can attend one of SAIS international campuses for the first year, either SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, or the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China, followed by two to three semesters at the D.C. campus. The Bachelor of Arts degree is awarded after the completion of the fourth year of study, and the Master of Arts degree is awarded after the fifth year.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Students selected for the SAIS BA/MA DMP may have the opportunity to study abroad during their Homewood years on a case-by-case basis. However, they should discuss their plans with the International Studies Program Director before submitting an application to the Global Education Office.
