Program Overview
Mathematical Sciences
The Mathematical Sciences program at University College Cork is a four-year, full-time course that offers students a comprehensive education in mathematics and its applications. The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical theory, as well as practical skills in problem-solving, programming, and data analysis.
Course Outline
The program consists of 12 modules per year, with a mix of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory practicals. In the first year, students take modules in introductory mathematics, mechanics, mathematical modeling, and programming. In subsequent years, students can choose from a range of modules in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and physics.
Course Practicalities
Students can expect to spend around 12 hours per week in lectures and 6 hours per week in tutorials. Laboratory practicals are also an integral part of the program, and students may be required to purchase basic safety items such as a laboratory coat or goggles.
Why Choose This Course
The Mathematical Sciences program at University College Cork is an ideal choice for students who enjoy mathematics and want to develop their skills in a supportive and challenging environment. The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematical theory, as well as practical skills in problem-solving, programming, and data analysis.
Requirements
To be eligible for the program, students must have a minimum grade of H3 in one subject and H5 in another subject, as well as a minimum grade of O6/H7 in four other subjects. Students must also have studied mathematics at second level or have equivalent qualifications.
Fees and Costs
The tuition fees for the program vary depending on whether the student is an EU or non-EU student. The State will pay the tuition fees for EU students who are eligible under the Free Fees Scheme. The annual student contribution and capitation fees are payable by the student.
How to Apply
Students can apply for the program through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Mature students can apply through the CAO by February 1st, and non-EU students can apply online through the UCC Apply portal.
