Program Overview

Medical Imaging & Radiation Sciences (Online)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences is a flexible part-time route where students undertake 60 credits of modules. A further 30 credits of study allows students to qualify for the award of an MSc in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences.

Course Outline

Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences at UCC is a new programme designed to provide diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists, and allied health professionals with the post-registration knowledge and skills to embark on specialist practice. The programme is delivered entirely online and will equip students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to practice using advanced imaging modalities, treatment techniques, and in areas of extended or advancing practice.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences has 9 distinct Specialty Pathways, each with their own pathway-specific modules and learning outcomes. These pathways include:

  • Computed Tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Mammography
  • Management and Leadership
  • Ultrasound (Obstetrics and Gynaecology)
  • Radiation Protection
  • Image Interpretation
  • Advanced Practice
  • Radiation Therapy

Course Practicalities

Teaching and learning strategies for the MIRS programme are designed to enable students to develop self-direction and to promote responsibility for their learning. Knowledge and skills required for critical reasoning (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation) will be developed in a progressive approach, and a range of key skills will be featured within the modules.

Shared learning with students in the online platform will help promote inter-professional teamwork. Integrating theory with practice, underpinned by research and the best available evidence, and applying professional and critical skills, are embedded within learning and teaching at all levels.

Virtual Learning Environments

Our teaching and learning in this course is delivered via a blended learning approach facilitated by the Virtual Learning Environments (VLE). Problem-solving approaches to learning are also fully utilised. Where possible, all learning material will be available via the VLE and can be accessed in any location with internet access and asynchronously.

Blended learning enables students to learn via electronic and online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching. Our courses are delivered entirely online and content is delivered within the UCC CANVAS platform and includes live drop-in sessions. We also consider the face-to-face teaching that students experience within their clinical environment and workplace.

Asynchronous learning takes place at different times and can be undertaken according to students' schedules and does not require real-time interactions. Fundamentally this allows students to organise their workload and learning as their schedules permit.
