Outline
This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of elective orthopaedic nursing. The course is divided into six units:
- Unit 1: Philosophy, theory, concepts, and principles of adult orthopaedic nursing. Importance of research and evidence-based practice for quality orthopaedic nursing. The multidisciplinary orthopaedic team.
- Unit 2: The anatomy, physiology of bone and joints. Epidemiology of orthopaedic conditions requiring elective surgery.
- Unit 3: Role of nurse in supporting the management of elective orthopaedic procedures with a specific focus on the indications for hip and knee surgery and potential complications arising from hip and knee surgery.
- Unit 4: Role of nurse in supporting the management of elective orthopaedic procedures with a specific focus on the indications for upper limb surgery and potential complications arising from upper limb surgery.
- Unit 5: Contemporary issues in elective orthopaedic nursing encompassing musculoskeletal assessment, pain, nutrition, mobility, and infection prevention.
- Unit 6: Contemporary issues in elective orthopaedic nursing encompassing integrated care, rehabilitation, health education, and promotion. Individual and family-centered care.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Explain the role and responsibility of the nurse in assessing and managing the patient undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery
- Enhance orthopaedic nursing practice through the application of theoretical, practical, and policy knowledge and clinical skills in the context of caring for individuals with various elective orthopaedic conditions
- Critically appraise and evaluate current research evidence and best practice for orthopaedic nursing and its implications for supporting patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery
- Synthesise health-related issues for the development of intervention/service responses appropriate to the needs of individuals undergoing surgery for various elective orthopaedic conditions and their families
- Contribute as a learned member of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of quality healthcare for individuals and families within the context of orthopaedic nursing
- Critically reflect on the health promotion role of the nurse in supporting bone health
