Program Outline
This is a four-year, full-time MPharmSci (Hons) degree program in Pharmaceutical Science, designed to prepare students for careers in pharmaceutical research, development, and related fields.
- Developing essential skills.
Outline:
Year 1:
- Shared with Pharmaceutical Science BSc (Hons) program.
- Focus on foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, and physiology.
- Core Modules:
- Academic Skills for Molecular Sciences: Provides a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, transferable skills (exam strategy, library and referencing, etc. ), and IT skills.
- Bioscience 1: Covers cell biology, microbiology, human physiology, and the biochemical processes within cells.
Year 2:
- Focus on organic and medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, and practical skills development.
- Building upon Year 1 knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry.
- Core Modules:
- Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics: Covers pharmacology, toxicology, immunology, and pharmaceutics, including drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and formulation science.
- Analytical Science: Introduces the applications of analytical science in analytical biochemistry, clinical chemistry, forensic analysis, and pharmaceutical sciences.
- Practical and Research Skills in Pharmaceutical Science: Focuses on developing practical skills and data interpretation through experiments in organic synthesis, drug formulation, and pharmacology/immunology.
- Deepens knowledge in natural product chemistry and analytical skills for testing and evaluating drug safety and effectiveness.
- Core Modules:
- Organic and Natural Product Chemistry: Builds upon Year 2 organic chemistry topics, introduces pharmacognosy, combinatorial chemistry, photochemistry, and free radical chemistry.
- Drug Development: Covers pharmacology in treating diseases, synthetic chemistry in drug molecule development, structure-activity effects, intellectual property protection, toxicology, and the immune response to toxins.
- Topics in Pharmaceutical Science: Discusses various aspects of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, including drug delivery, polymers, biomaterials, patents, intellectual property, health and safety, and legislation.
- Optional Modules:
- Advanced Analytical Science: Develops a more rigorous theoretical understanding of spectroscopy and explores advanced applications, including radiochemical analysis, electroanalysis, and thermal analysis.
Year 4:
- Focus on independent research and advanced modules in drug design, discovery, and development.
- Students spend half their time on a research project.
- Core Modules:
- Research Project: Develops conceptual and practical skills for research, including data analysis and communication of results.
- Topics in Drug Design, Discovery and Development: Covers synthetic chemistry in drug molecule development, structure-activity effects, advanced spectroscopic techniques, intellectual property protection, and risks of exploitation.
