Program Outline
- Provide in-depth knowledge and understanding of core areas of pharmaceutical science and the associated legal framework.
- Teach students how to design, synthesize, and develop drugs.
- Develop students' independent learning skills, written and oral communication skills, and transferable skills.
- Prepare students for graduate employment in various scientific disciplines, particularly regulatory affairs.
Outline:
Year 1:
- Introduction to Spectroscopy and Experimental Techniques (30 credits): Introduces basic laboratory techniques, procedures, and spectroscopic techniques.
- Academic Skills for Molecular Sciences (30 credits): Covers mathematics, statistics, transferable skills (exam strategy, referencing, problem-solving), and IT skills.
- Foundation Chemistry (30 credits): Refreshes core chemistry concepts, including atomic and molecular structure, functional group interconversions, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
- Pharmacology and Pharmaceutics (30 credits): Explores the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, as well as drug formulation and bioavailability.
- Analytical Science (30 credits): Introduces applications of analytical science in analytical biochemistry, clinical chemistry, forensic analysis, and pharmaceutical sciences.
- Practical and Research Skills in Pharmaceutical Science (30 credits): Develops practical skills in organic synthesis, drug formulation, and pharmacology/immunology, and explores research methodologies.
Optional Sandwich Year:
- Project (30 credits): Provides an opportunity for students to undertake a scientific project, developing skills in project planning, methodology, data analysis, and dissemination.
- Topics in Pharmaceutical Science (30 credits): Covers aspects of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, including drug delivery, polymers, biomaterials, patents, intellectual property, health and safety, and legislation.
Optional Modules:
- Advanced Analytical Science (30 credits): Develops a more rigorous theoretical understanding of spectroscopic techniques and introduces advanced applications, including radiochemical analysis, electroanalysis, and thermal analysis.
Assessment:
Assessment methods vary across the program and may include:
- Coursework: 45% in Year 1, 21% in Year 2, 57% in Year 3
- Exams: 55% in Year 1, 64% in Year 2, 36% in Year 3
- Practical: 15% in Year 2, 7% in Year 3 Feedback on assessments is provided within 20 working days.
Teaching:
- Scheduled Learning and Teaching: Includes lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, placements, project work, practical sessions, workshops, conferences, and field trips.
- Guided Independent Study: Students are expected to engage in self-study, reading articles and books, undertaking research, and preparing for assessments.
