Program Overview
This practical coaching degree combines the science behind effective coaching, performance, leadership, and sports analysis. Students gain hands-on experience with sophisticated equipment and develop independent learning skills through a project or dissertation. The program is endorsed by BASES and CIMSPA, preparing graduates for careers in sport development and coaching roles in various sectors.
Program Outline
Modules cover psychology, motivation, human physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, and notational analysis. A project or dissertation on a selected topic will develop your independent learning skills. You will gain the CIMSPA Coaching Assistant qualification after successfully completing your first year. Note: this course was previously called Sport Science (Coaching) BSc (Hons).
Year 2:
- Analysis in Sport and Exercise: Introduces the technical and tactical analysis of sport performance.
- Performance Analysis in Sport: Develops skills gained in Year 2 and further enhances the role of performance analysis within sport.
- Sports and Exercise Science Project: Allows students to research an area of interest, culminating in an original and significant piece of research.
- Optional Modules: Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology, Applied Sport Psychology, Biomechanics of Sport Performance and Injury, Sport Nutrition
Assessment:
- Year 1: Coursework (65%); practical (35%)
- Year 2: Coursework (58%); practical (42%)
- Year 3: Coursework (61%); exams (39%)
Teaching:
- Scheduled learning and teaching on this course includes timetabled activities including lectures, seminars, and small group tutorials.
- It may also include placements, project work, practical sessions, workshops, conferences, and field trips.
- Guided independent study (self-managed time) is required outside of scheduled learning and teaching hours.
Careers:
- Graduates are prepared for careers in sport development and coaching-related roles in both public and private sectors.
- There is a work placement year option available for students.
