The Doctor of Education (EdD) is a professional doctorate designed for education professionals in various fields and settings. It's intended for individuals working as teachers, managers, or leaders in early years, schools, colleges, universities, health and social care, libraries, prisons, museums, or heritage services. The EdD combines contextual modules, critical self-reflection, and independent research.
Outline:
Structure:
- Part-time: 6 years, with a 2.5-year taught phase and a 1.5-3.5-year research phase.
- Learning Format: Weekend-based, day conference format held at the Kingston Hill campus.
Course Schedule:
- Year 1:
- Modules: Education professionals as knowledgeable doers (30 credits), Policy transfer and analysis (30 credits).
- Learning Events: Four full weekends (Saturday and Sunday) in February, April, June, and September; and the EdD Conference Day in November (recommended but not compulsory).
- Year 2:
- Modules: Knowledge and practice in educational settings (30 credits), Research proposal (Start in Year 2 and continue in Year 3: 60 credits).
- Learning Events: Two full learning weekends (Saturday and Sunday) in February and April for "Knowledge and Practice in Educational Settings" module, two Saturday learning events in July and September for "The Research Proposal" module, and the Conference Day in November.
- Year 3:
- Modules: Research proposal (Start in Year 2 and continue in Year 3: 60 credits), Research project (210 credits).
- Learning Events: Saturday events in February, April, July, and September; and the Conference Day in November.
- Final Years (Year 4+):
- Modules: Research project (210 credits) It uses face-to-face and technology-enhanced methods to facilitate interprofessional learning. The module examines concepts, principles, and practices that define professionalism, professional identities, and professional practice in education-related settings.
- Policy Transfer and Analysis (30 credits): This module critically examines the local and global contextualisation of education policy, transfer, and debates surrounding neoliberal perspectives. It integrates with the first module in cross-cutting themes, allowing students to reflect on their role as education professionals in relation to policy.
- Knowledge and Practice in Educational Settings (30 credits): This module critically examines theories of knowledge in educational and social research, their ontological, epistemological, and methodological foundations, and relates them to the field of study and research interests. It explores contested knowledge and practice, the reasons behind research, and the connection between research and the profession.
- Research Proposal (60 credits, split across Year 2 and 3): This module requires students to develop a research proposal, serving as the transition between taught modules and the Research Project. Successful completion ensures students are ready for the professionally-relevant and academically advanced applied educational research project. The module enables students to undertake original research and contribute new knowledge to their professional field.
Assessment:
- Year 1: 100% coursework (two written assignments).
- Year 2: 100% coursework (one written assignment and one oral presentation, potentially taking place at the beginning of Year 3).
- Years 4-6: 100% coursework (a written thesis and a viva voce oral examination anytime between years 4-6).
