What You Will Study

The course is divided into two years, with the following modules:


YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)

  • Professional and Academic Development (Core): This module aims to equip students with a range of skills and attributes in preparation to work in their chosen sector whilst following professional codes of practice.
  • Professional Practice 1 (Core): This module enables students to apply and integrate professional skills, knowledge, and behaviours gained from the program into a real-life workplace setting.
  • Canine Behaviour and Cognition (Core): This module enables students to understand canine cognitive abilities, body language, and communication.
  • Human Canine Interaction (Core): This module introduces students to the many facets of canine-human interaction and the wide-ranging roles of dogs in society across time and cultures.
  • Introduction to Canine Anatomy and Physiology (Core): This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of canine anatomy and physiology at both a systems and cellular level.
  • Specialist Training (Core): This module introduces students to the specialist field of canine scent detection.

YEAR 2 (LEVEL 5)

  • Professional Practice 2 (Core): This module enables students to build upon the professional skills, knowledge, and behaviours gained from the program and previous professional practice module at level 4.
  • Canine Learning and Training (Core): This module equips students with the underpinning knowledge of learning theory and its application to practical training.
  • Conditioning and Sports Performance (Core): This module explores canine conditioning techniques and performance analysis.
  • Practical Health and Disease (Core): This module extends and develops students' knowledge and understanding of canine health and disease from the level 4 anatomy and physiology module.
  • Specialist Training 2 (Core): This module analyzes specific specialist areas of expertise in the field of canine scent detection, building upon knowledge gained in specialist training 1.
  • Training Instruction and Coaching skills (Core): This module enables students to develop the teaching and coaching skills necessary for effective performance in the workplace.

Entry Requirements & Applying

The entry requirements for this course are 48-72 UCAS points. Experience with dogs will also be considered. The course is for those who are passionate about dogs and working with them, rather than against them.


Teaching & Assessment

This program includes a variety of learning and teaching methods, including practical sessions, lectures, workshops, and online activities. Assessments will be broad, ranging from practical to reports.


Career Prospects

Graduates of this course can pursue careers as dog trainers, detection dog handlers, kennel managers, canine rescue workers, canine performance specialists, welfare consultants, and dog day care managers. Progression to further study is also an option.
