Overview
The Bachelor of Arts in Japanese is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the Japanese language, culture, and literature. The program aims to equip students with the skills to speak, listen, write, and read Japanese, as well as to analyze and appreciate various aspects of Japanese culture and literature.
Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts in Japanese requires 48 units of coursework, including 39 units of required courses and 9 units of electives. The required courses include:
- JAPN 101: First Semester Japanese (4 units)
- JAPN 102: Second Semester Japanese (4 units)
- JAPN 103: Third Semester Japanese (4 units)
- JAPN 250: Intensive Study of Kanji: Level I (3 units)
- JAPN 251: Intensive Study of Kanji: Level 2 (3 units)
- JAPN 301: Japanese Conversation (3 units)
- JAPN 302: Japanese Reading and Grammar (3 units)
- JAPN 305: Advanced Conversation and Composition - Language and Culture (3 units)
- JAPN 306: Advanced Conversation and Composition - Language and Humanities (3 units)
- JAPN 309: Advanced Readings in Japanese I (3 units)
- JAPN 310: Advanced Readings in Japanese II (3 units)
- JAPN 401: Topics in Japanese Culture (3 units)
- JAPN 510: Modern Japanese Literature (3 units)
- MLL 325: Linguistics for Foreign Languages (3 units)
Graduation Writing Requirement (GWAR)
Students must complete a Graduation Writing Requirement (GWAR) course, which can be satisfied by taking either MLL 400GW: Reading and Analysis of Cultural Texts - GWAR or CWL 400GW: Approaches to Comparative and World Literature - GWAR.
Upper-Division Electives
Students must complete 6 units of upper-division electives, which can be chosen from a variety of courses in Japanese language, literature, and culture.
Complementary Studies
Students must complete 12 units of Complementary Studies, which must come from courses bearing a prefix other than JAPN, excluding MLL 325, and not cross-listed with JAPN.
General Education Requirements
Students must complete the General Education requirements, which include courses in English composition, critical thinking, oral communication, mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning, arts, humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical science, biological science, laboratory, ethnic studies, and science or math/quantitative reasoning.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Japanese, students will be able to:
- Speak, listen, write, and read Japanese throughout a variety of language and linguistic courses.
- Identify and analyze various elements of Japanese culture not only through a range of culture-focused courses but also through general language courses.
- Read and analyze authentic Japanese literary texts and develop their understanding of multi-faceted nature of literary analysis in relation to various contexts and perspectives.
- Write coherent and engaging essays in Japanese that conform to accepted academic standards.

General Advising Information for Transfer Students
Transfer students should complete as many lower-division requirements or electives for this major as possible before transferring to SF State. Students should also attempt to identify and take an appropriate course in critical thinking (1B/A3) no later than the term of application to the CSU.
