Program Overview

The Mathematics Minor at SF State is a 24-unit program that equips students with problem-solving skills, rigorous thinking, and effective communication abilities. Core courses include Calculus I-III and Linear Algebra, while elective courses provide flexibility for students to explore their interests. The program emphasizes knowledge integration and aims to prepare students for career paths that require mathematical proficiency.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Mathematics Minor is a 24-unit program that requires a minimum of 12 units to be completed at SF State, including at least 6 upper-division units. The program aims to equip students with the skills to:

  • Solve problems using mathematical techniques such as optimization, applied linear algebra, differential equations, and statistical inference.
  • Formulate and analyze mathematical conjectures and justify conclusions rigorously in sound mathematical English.
  • Achieve knowledge integration in both content and practice, for example, by solving problems that arise from the mathematical modeling of practical situations.
  • Communicate effectively to a variety of audiences using oral, written, and visual modes.

Outline:

The Mathematics Minor consists of two parts: core courses and elective courses.

Core Courses (15-16 units):

  • MATH 226: Calculus I (4 units)
  • MATH 227: Calculus II (4 units)
  • MATH 228: Calculus III (4 units)
  • Select One:
  • MATH 225: Introduction to Linear Algebra (3 units)
  • MATH 325: Linear Algebra (4 units)

Elective Courses (9 units):

  • Upper-division electives on advisement.

Other:

  • CR/NC grades are not acceptable in courses taken to fulfill Mathematics minor requirements.
  • All coursework used to satisfy the requirements of the minor must be completed with a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
