Degree Overview:

Construction is a fast-growing industry in the UK, and the need for companies to gain and retain skilled project managers is growing with it. This hands-on commercial and technical fast-track FdSc Construction Project Management degree can help you make the most of the opportunities available. As a foundation degree, its practical structure lets you complete the course in two years while you are employed in the industry. If you choose to, you can then progress directly on to the final year of an Honours degree in Construction Project Management. With its emphasis on sustainable development and construction, this course prepares you for the challenges of the modern building industry. As you study, you will develop the ability to make sure projects are procured, designed and contracted properly, and delivered safely, on time and within budget. This course is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Outline:

This fast-track foundation degree combines work-based and university-based learning. Its structure lets you complete the course in two years on day release (one day per week), while you are employed in the industry or gaining work experience.

Level 4:

• Professional Practice (work-based)
You will also study finishes and primary service provision, including gas and electricity services.
• Building Regulatory Control: This module is designed to give you an understanding and appreciation of building regulations and town and country planning legislation that affect the building industry.
You will be able to investigate the effects of the legislation upon construction projects. You'll also gain essential knowledge and skills regarding health and safety. You will start by learning to use basic AutoCAD functions to produce 2D building design drawings, including floor plans, elevations and sections. Then you will progress to applying AutoCAD Revit to produce more complicated and complete design drawings, including 3D views and assembly and part details. You will also examine the role of the project manager and learn to communicate using various methods appropriate to the role.
• Built Environment Company Review (work-based)

Level 5:

• Construction Technology 2: This module will allow you to develop your knowledge and understanding of building technology, focusing on the consequences of science on building design and sustainability.
Your studies will also cover multi-floored construction and a greater depth of services.
• Environmental Science & Building Services (work-based): This work-based module will provide you with knowledge about Environmental Science to help understand concepts and principles of heat and thermal insulation, air movement and ventilation, moisture and condensation, noise and sound insulation, natural and artificial light with various types of lighting design.
You will also look at building services and how these are integrated in the design of buildings.
• Project Planning: This module will show you how to plan, programme and control the resources used in construction.
It will give you an appreciation of the role of the project manager and the ways in which sites are managed.
• Construction Law: During this module, you will have the opportunity to develop your awareness of how the law applies to all aspects of construction.

We will also provide opportunities to expand your knowledge and your professional network through field trips and seminars. Visits to construction sites and materials manufacturers will help you grasp the real-world aspects of your theoretical studies. While weekly seminars with guest speakers drawn from academia, business and professional accreditation organisations will help you understand the industry and industry practice. Our research seminars are also open to undergraduate students and will give you the chance to deepen your knowledge in particular areas. There may also be opportunities to participate in competitions held by professional bodies, giving you the chance to demonstrate your skills. In addition to these, we offer a range of teaching methods to suit different learning styles, including:
