Program Overview
This accredited module equips healthcare professionals with specialist knowledge and evidence-based practices for delivering critical care to infants, children, and young people. Through face-to-face learning, simulations, and online resources, participants gain expertise in assessing, managing, and recognizing critically ill CYP. The module meets the Paediatric Critical Care Society's Quality Standards and provides a comprehensive understanding of the physiological processes and ethical issues involved in pediatric critical care.

Degree Overview:
The aim of this accredited module is to enable you to deliver specialist and evidence-based care to infants, children and young people (CYP) with pathophysiological problems that are critically ill or have the potential to develop critical illness (enhanced care/high dependency care, level 1 and 2 Dependency (PCCS, 2021). Case studies and simulations of case scenarios will be used to support learning and are integrated into study days. The module is designed to meet the Paediatric Critical Care Society (PCCS) Quality Standards for the Care of Critically Ill or Injured Children (PCCS, 2021).
Outline:
The module is designed for those working in relevant clinical settings such as Paediatric High Dependency/Critical Care Units, Paediatric Ward areas, and Emergency Departments. Course content includes:
- a structured clinical assessment using the ABCDE approach and a recognised tool (PEWS) to evaluate deterioration risk
- a range of communication tools/strategies such as Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendations (SBAR)
- the underpinning physiological and pathophysiological processes affecting a critically ill CYP
- evidence-based approaches to the assessment and management of a critically ill CYP
- how to recognise a critically ill CYP and undertake appropriate and timely decisions including transfers to critical care areas
- professional, psychosocial, legal and ethical issues of delivering care to the CYP and their family. Study days are from 9.00am to 5.00pm and are taught on a face-to-face basis.
Assessment:
Case studies and simulations of case scenarios will be used to support learning and are integrated into study days. Chiara Baiocchi is the course leader.

Entry Requirements:
Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level). You will be working within a clinical setting that cares for infants, children and young people with increased risk of clinical deterioration, requiring Level 1 and 2 care.
