Oregon State University's Education Degree prepares students to become licensed teachers while paying undergraduate tuition. Students can earn endorsements in various subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, and Language Arts. Graduates are eligible to begin teaching immediately and pursue advanced education in various fields.

Degree Overview:

The Education Degree offered at Oregon State University's Corvallis campus allows students to earn a degree in Education with the skills to become a licensed teacher while paying undergraduate tuition costs. Students can complete this degree to become endorsed in Biology, Chemistry, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health, and Integrated Science. Language Arts (English), Social Studies, Advanced Mathematics, Foundational Math, or Physics. Students are encouraged to complete a dual major related to their desired subject to gain in-depth knowledge in their desired teaching area. Students can begin teaching as soon as they graduate and are prepared to advance their education in various fields after completion based on their career goals. Students complete a year-long student teaching experience as part of a cohort with an average of 25 students with high support from faculty and mentors. Students can embed an ESOL Endorsement or Dual Language Specialization to enhance their skill sets.

Teaching:

Students take classes with expert faculty who have teaching experience in K-12 classrooms. Highly trained supervisors in the student's content area work closely with them as they complete their year-long student teaching experience.

Careers:

Students can begin teaching as soon as they graduate and are prepared to advance their education in various fields after completion based on their career goals.

• The program is offered in-person on the Corvallis campus.
• Students may take some prerequisites, content courses, or primary degree requirements online or at a community college.
• The average number of students per class is 25.
• The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:22.
• Over $130,000 in scholarships is available for eligible students.
• The program has changed from the Double Degree format.
• Students are encouraged to connect with local organizations to gain hands-on experience working with youth.
• Students can also connect with faculty to engage in research and get involved in clubs/organizations to gain leadership experience.
• The Licensure and Placement Specialist and other faculty will assist students in applying for their Oregon teaching licensure.
• The university also provides support in applying for teaching positions or exploring graduate programs to enhance skillsets.
• Students can complete several of the Education prerequisites and content mastery courses prior to transferring to OSU.
• OSU participates in the Degree Partnership Program, where students can dual enroll in courses at OSU and a partner community college.
• Individual degree plans will vary based on students' degree plans and prior credits earned.
• For students who complete Education as a standalone degree, this program can be completed in four years.
• For students completing a dual major or double degree, it may take 4-5 years to complete depending on the total credits needed.
• Students can complete the 60-hour pre-education requirement for classroom experience by taking ED 309, a three-credit course offered fall and winter term for Corvallis students.
• Students can also choose to meet the requirements through 60 hours of approved volunteer or work experience in a public school classroom with the age group they hope to teach.
• The Content Mastery sheet is a list of courses at OSU that provide content knowledge in the content area or subject students wish to teach.
• Background checks are valid for one year and are through the Oregon Department of Education.
• Fingerprints are valid for three years and are processed through TSPC, OSP, and the FBI.
