Program Overview
African American Studies, B.A.
The African American Studies program at Saint Louis University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the experiences, cultures, and contributions of people of African descent in the United States and around the world. Through a rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum, students will explore the historical, social, political, and cultural contexts that have shaped the lives of African Americans and other communities of African descent.
Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies is a 30-credit major that introduces students to the systematic investigation of the racial, ethnic, cultural, and political perspectives, experiences, and beliefs of people of African heritage. The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the complexities of African American life and culture, as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate and contribute to a diverse and global society.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the rich complexities of the social, political, economic, and cultural life of people of African descent in the United States and around the world.
- Interweave arguments and approaches from multiple disciplines into their assignments and projects.
- Engage in activities that encourage them to interact with and serve the African American and African diasporic community in order to critically assess public positions regarding critical and controversial issues facing African, African American, and African diasporic people.
Curriculum Overview
The major in African American Studies requires the completion of 30 credits, including five core courses and 15 credits of elective courses. The core courses are designed to introduce students to the goals of the Department of African American Studies and to help them develop an understanding of the African diaspora and its impact, interrelationships, and dynamics in contemporary African American communities.

- AAM 2010: Contemporary Black America
- AAM 4970: Research Methods in African American Studies
- AAM 4960: Capstone Course
- One elective course at the 3000 or 4000 level
Elective Courses

Admission Requirements
