Degree Overview:
The Master of Translation Studies at the University of Western Australia is a professionally endorsed translation training program designed for graduates seeking bilingual and multilingual careers. It offers world-class specialized translation training at the largest language hub in Western Australia.
Objectives:
- To develop high proficiency and communication skills in language pairs: English and Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish.
- To train students to translate between two languages accurately and fluently, using state-of-the-art technology and applying time-honoured and innovative strategies.
- To develop professional skills and build a network of peers and professionals in the field.
Description:
The program is the only one of its kind in Western Australia, offering professional translation training between English and one of the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. While focusing on written translation, the program also introduces students to interpreting (spoken translation). The program fosters critical thinking, linguistic and analytical skills through frontier translation theories and latest technologies. It also offers the flexibility of taking either the coursework-only pathway or the coursework and dissertation pathway, should students plan to progress to a PhD in Translation Studies. The program features small class sizes to provide personalized learning experiences and strong collaboration links with local and national professional organizations and agencies, offering students regular practical skills development opportunities.

Course Structure:
- The Master of Translation offers ten language specializations. A Chinese Interpreting specialization is also available to students in the Chinese specialization in the second year of their degree.
- Coursework-only students:
- Take 6 points from Group A, 24 points from Group B, and 24 points from the relevant language specialization.
- Coursework-only students undertaking the Chinese Interpreting specialization:
- Take 6 points from Group A, 24 points from the Chinese Specialization, and 24 points from the Chinese Interpreting specialization.
- Coursework and dissertation students:
- Take 6 points from Group A, 24 points from Group C, and 24 points from the relevant language specialization.
Conversion Units:
- Students who have not completed a relevant Bachelor's degree as recognized by UWA must complete relevant conversion units up to the value of 24 points, as advised by UWA.
