Degree Overview:

This Graduate Certificate in Architectural Conservation is designed for individuals interested in entering or already working in the field of architectural conservation. It provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in this specialized area. The program aims to equip students with advanced cognitive, technical, and communication skills to select and apply conservation methods and technologies to address conservation problems.


Objectives:

  • Develop professional-level skills in conservation planning and practical building conservation.
  • Gain insight into the full range of concepts, methods, and practices involved in architectural conservation.
  • Generate and transmit solutions to complex conservation planning problems.

Outline:

The program is delivered part-time and consists of 24 credit points. Students must complete all units from Option Group A. Option Group B units are only available to students who have completed specific units in a previous degree.


Option Group A:

  • ARCT5506 Conservation Planning in Practice (6 points): This unit teaches professional-level skills in all the Burra Charter processes of conservation planning, from research to understand and assess the cultural significance of places, to the development of policies designed to retain that significance, and how to prepare management strategies to implement those policies through their ongoing use and care.
  • ARCT5575 Practical Building Conservation (6 points): This unit teaches professional-level practical skills in the investigation of significant places, in order to survey their physical condition and devise appropriate repair and maintenance schedules that are designed to conserve their cultural value and keep them in viable use.
  • ARCT5576 Introduction to Architectural Conservation (6 points): This unit explores the history and philosophy of conservation, the role of heritage organizations, the language and principles of the Australia ICOMOS Burra Charter, the conservation planning processes it recommends, the roles of different disciplines, an introduction to practical building conservation, the assessment and protection of landscapes and townscapes, and the management and interpretation of significant places.

Teaching:

The course is delivered by qualified and experienced conservation practitioners. The program includes a combination of on-campus and online learning. Students can expect six contact hours per week, plus additional personal study.

Graduates of this program will be valuable to employers in specialist architectural practices, as well as to other employers in the conservation industry (National Trust of Australia, Office of Heritage, State and Local Government organizations) and to general architectural practices.

  • The course is subsidized for Australian residents through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
  • Students will have access to well-equipped facilities at the School of Design, including studio spaces, design hubs, digital fabrication equipment, computer labs, printmaking studios, multimedia production facilities, and the Cullity Gallery.
