This micro-credential equips professionals in tailings management with the skills to develop and implement Tailings Management Plans, ensuring the safety and efficiency of tailings storage facilities. Led by Professor Andy Fourie, it is part of a stackable series towards the Graduate Certificate in Tailings Management, addressing the industry's need for skilled professionals aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management.

Degree Overview:
This micro-credential is designed for professionals working in the field of tailings management, particularly practicing engineers, geoscientists, or individuals responsible for planning tailings deposition schedules. It focuses on ensuring operational safety and efficiency of the tailings storage facility. This micro-credential is the first of three in the Tailings Operations and Water Management series.
Objectives:
Participants will learn the importance of developing, documenting, and implementing a Tailings Management Plan that caters to both short-term tailings capacity requirements and long-term life-of-mine requirements. The program covers key aspects like deposition strategies, layer thickness, maintaining freeboard, decant systems, and how to incorporate these into a Tailings Management Plan.

- Recommended Prior Knowledge: Practicing engineers, geoscientists, or individuals with significant experience in tailings in an oversight capacity and those wanting to gain knowledge on tailings management strategies. This micro-credential will require engineering numerical skills.
- Stackable: This micro-credential is one of a series of twelve micro-credentials that are stackable towards the Graduate Certificate in Tailings Management.
- Global Industry Standard: The recent Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management has increased demand for tailings professionals, while the industry faces a shortage of appropriately trained personnel. This micro-credential and the Graduate Certificate in Tailings Management aim to address this gap.
- English Language Competency: To apply for the Graduate Certificate award, you must have a Bachelor of Engineering degree or a degree in a related field and have met UWA's English language competency requirements.
- BHP and Rio Tinto Employees: Employees of BHP or Rio Tinto have specific registration options and fee structures depending on the number of Tailings Management micro-credentials they have already completed.
