Program Overview


Psychological Science - M.A.

Overview

The Master of Arts degree in Psychological Science is an intermediate degree only for students admitted to one of the doctoral programs in the Department of Psychological Sciences. The program is strongly research-oriented.


Admissions

The Department of Psychological Sciences does not accept applicants only interested in pursuing the M.A. degree in Psychological Science.


Coursework

Major Requirements

  • PSYC 61651: QUANTITATIVE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS I (3 credits)
  • PSYC 61654: QUANTITATIVE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS II (3 credits)
  • PSYC 61685: CLINICAL RESEARCH METHODS 1 (3 credits) or PSYC 62685: RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE
  • Additional Program Electives (15 credits)
  • PSYC 61199: THESIS I (6 credits)

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum Major GPA: 3.000
  • Minimum Overall GPA: 3.000
  • The program requires full-time continuous enrollment, including summers.
  • Students pursuing the Ph.D. degree in Psychological Science must complete a first-year project and present it to faculty and graduate students during the fall of their second year.
  • No more than one-half of a graduate student’s coursework may be taken in 50000-level courses.
  • Grades below C are not counted toward completion of requirements for the degree.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:


  1. Demonstrate mastery of the current theories and significant empirical findings in a major area of psychological science. Mastery includes acquiring both an understanding of these materials as well as the ability to think critically about them.
  2. Teach courses in psychological science.
  3. Supervise and mentor undergraduate students in both research settings and in the classroom.
  4. Design, execute, analyze and report empirical studies that make a significant contribution in a major area of psychological science.
