Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons)

Course Description

This action-packed degree is designed to equip you with the specialist skills needed to prepare you for graduate employment. You'll build vital employability skills on work placements with organisations like Derby County FC, Derbyshire Country Cricket Club, and Burton Albion FC. You'll also have the chance to gain additional sport and exercise science professional qualifications, which are recognised and highly valued by employers.

Core Modules

  • Coaching and Skill Acquisition
    • This module will focus on the application of skill acquisition theories in the coaching practice. Students will develop an understanding of how principles such as feedback, attentional focus, and the environment can inform session design and delivery; with the view to enhancing both athlete learning and performance.
    • Student’s practical skill development will centre upon their ability to enhance performance through the application of skill acquisition principles. Students will be taught via a variety of lectures and seminars as well as practical coaching sessions.

Assessment

We have received particular praise from external reviewers on our innovative use of practical assessments, which take place in our new specialised facilities. These are carried out alongside written coursework, verbal presentations, and examination-style assessments to create a well-balanced assessment portfolio.


Who Will Teach You

  • Mark Newman
    • Programme Leader
    • As a Senior Lecturer in Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation, Mark Newman is involved in teaching across a range of modules on the programme, delivering theoretical and practical sessions in line with the requirements of the Society of Sports Therapists.

Entry Requirements

  • 2025 entry:
    • UCAS points: 112
    • A Level: BBC (At least a grade C (or equivalent) from a Science subject, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Education, or Psychology)
    • T Level: T Level in Science
    • BTEC: DMM (in Sport-related subject)
    • GCSE: GCSE Maths and English Grade 4/Grade C (or above) or equivalent qualification
    • Access to HE: Pass Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits: 45 at Level 3 with a minimum of Distinction: 15, Merit: 24, Pass: 6. Must include passes in compulsory Level 3 subjects
    • English language requirements: IELTS: 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each skills area)
