Degree Overview:

Biotechnology is the application of biology for the benefit of humanity and the environment. It harnesses living organisms to provide foods and medicines, and for tasks such as cleaning toxic waste or detecting harmful substances. Biotechnology has roots in food and agriculture, using yeast to make beer and bread, and lactic acid bacteria to make cheese. Modern technologies such as genetic engineering make biotechnology a major part of Ireland’s economic future in biopharmaceuticals, biomedicine, agriculture, the food industry and the environment. Alongside core knowledge of modern biology, the BSc Biotechnology degree provides tailored training in communications, business and languages skills. Students complete individual projects in research laboratories on campus in their fourth year, and have the opportunity to undertake placements in industry in Ireland, or research laboratories across Europe.

Outline:

Year One

• Biotechnology Concepts and Labs: This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts and techniques of biotechnology.
• Chemistry: This module provides a foundation in chemistry, including the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, and organic chemistry.
• Data Science: This module introduces students to the principles and applications of data science in biotechnology.
• Employability Skills in Biotechnology: This module focuses on developing essential skills for success in the biotechnology industry, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
• Language (French or German or Irish): This module provides students with the opportunity to learn a foreign language, which can be beneficial for international careers.

Year Two

• Biotechnology Innovations: This module explores the latest advancements and emerging trends in biotechnology.
• Biochemistry: This module covers the chemical processes that occur within living organisms, including metabolism, enzyme kinetics, and molecular genetics.
• Chemistry: This module continues to build upon the chemistry foundation from Year One, with a focus on organic chemistry and analytical techniques.
• Biochemistry: This module delves deeper into biochemistry, covering topics such as metabolic pathways, protein structure and function, and gene regulation.
• Microbiology: This module explores the diversity of microorganisms and their roles in various environments, including human health, agriculture, and industry.
• Pharmacology: This module introduces students to the principles of drug action and development.
• Language (French or German or Irish): This module continues to enhance students' language proficiency.
• Placement and on-campus option: Students have the option to undertake a 3-6 month placement in Irish industry or a research laboratory in continental Europe.

Year Four

• Advanced research project or advanced skills and employability training: Students can choose to complete a research project or an advanced skills and employability training program.
• Topical scientific literature review: This module teaches students how to critically evaluate and synthesize scientific literature.
• Recombinant protein production or Plant and AgriBiotechnologies: Students can choose to specialize in recombinant protein production or plant and agricultural biotechnology.
