Ageing and Public Policy (MSc)

Program Overview

The MSc in Ageing & Public Policy critically examines demographic ageing from a public policy perspective. It assesses existing approaches and future directions to secure effective and fair ageing societies. It is a new innovative, interdisciplinary program that delivers sought after transferable and topic-specific skill sets and incorporates an applied project and placements at national public, NGO and private organizations.

Program Outline

You'll develop your ability to understand the Criminal Justice System (CJS) at a conceptual and operational level, exploring both UK and international perspectives.

Outline:

Year 1

It examines principles for organizational development models and their impact on informed thinking and decision-making.

• Research in Practice (FZ4729): This module teaches and applies qualitative and quantitative research techniques, differentiating between method and methodology while evaluating research quality and validity.
You'll gain a theoretical framework for empirical and practical research approaches. Starting with the police, the module progresses through the criminal justice system, identifying and critically evaluating key issues and debates.
• Optional Modules:
It reviews multi-agency responses to safeguarding and abuse, particularly towards vulnerable groups, assesses and debates key research, identifies effective criminal justice practices, and explores areas needing development.
• Religion and Radicalisation (FZ4710): This module analyzes how various forms of extremism are influenced by different motivations, focusing on the role of faith in radicalization.
It evaluates implications for counter-terrorism methods and organizational leadership.
• International Terrorism (FZ4711): This module examines legislation, policy, and case studies, assessing resulting investigations.
You'll explore the connection between investigative organizations and the political landscape. It covers emerging international threats and terrorism's driving factors, providing a comprehensive understanding.
• Open Source Internet Investigation (FZ4720): This module introduces Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) in investigations and research.
You'll learn to use the internet as a valuable investigative tool and operate in an online world. You'll study computer security, legislation and ethics, and online footprints.
• International Criminal Law and Security (LA4501): This module introduces you to the substantive doctrine, values, and policies of international criminal law at a postgraduate level of analysis, requiring sustained critical analysis and independent research.

• The course leader is Dr. Emily Cooper, whose PhD relates to sex work regulation.
Dr. Cooper is an experienced lecturer in the field of criminal justice and an active researcher, with a specific interest in sex crimes, digital-sexual exploitation, and evidence-based policing.
