Program Overview

This module in wound care management provides practitioners with evidence-based knowledge and theoretical rationale to optimize patient care. It covers wound healing, assessment, dressings, duty of care, and critical evaluation of best practices, preparing individuals for career advancement in this specialized field.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This module is designed to build on practice experience of practitioners who undertake wound care management. It will provide theoretical rationale underpinning practice and enable critical analysis relating theory to practice in wound care management. It will ideally require actual practice of wound care management in a clinical environment or patient home.

  • To provide evidence-based knowledge of the physiology of normal wound healing and factors that may delay this.
  • To gain knowledge of duty of care in relation to wound management.
  • To develop a working knowledge of the theory underpinning the practice of wound care management plus an ability to critically evaluate current evidence.
  • To be able to assess, plan, implement and critically evaluate normal wound healing in clinical practice and to manage any adverse changes.
  • To demonstrate evidence of best practice.
  • To develop the ability to manage an aspect of patient care over time using good documentation and practical skills.
  • To enhance critical analyses skills.
  • To improve interpersonal communication skills in relation to a clinical situation.

Assessment:

Formative:

  • Students will give a reflective account of a wound they have managed (or an image of a wound with a brief scenario will be provided) and how the MDT was involved in this patient’s care.

Summative:

  • Two Hour Exam = 100%
  • A written examination during which achievement of the module learning outcomes will be demonstrated (100%).
  • The assessment requires the student to provide evidence of knowledge of the probable cause of the wound, assessment of the wound, treatment and prevention of recurrence.
  • Two hours will be allowed for the candidate to explain how he/she would manage the wound shown on a picture and patient case history as well as complete short answers.

Pass Mark:

  • 40% for level 6
  • 50% for level 7

Careers:

  • This module seeks to provide focus and direction for practitioners who wish to develop their skills and expertise in relation to wound care.
  • The module aims to enable an individual practitioner to have broader competence skills to progress in a direction that meets workforce, meeting the needs of the future NHS as outlines in the Five Year Forward View in 2014 by the Department of Health (DH, 2014) and the HEE agenda for Clinical Academic Careers Framework (HEE 2015).
  • Completion of this Module should help the practitioner to be in a better position to progress in their career.
