This advanced glaucoma course for healthcare professionals builds on the Professional Certificate in Glaucoma, enhancing clinical practice and knowledge. Through online learning, a practical workshop, and a clinical placement, students develop skills in diagnosing ocular hypertension and primary open-angle glaucoma, monitoring patients, and managing treatment. The course is accredited by the College of Optometrists and carries 20 credits at level 7.

Degree Overview:
This course is designed for optometrists and other healthcare professionals who hold the Professional Certificate in Glaucoma and wish to further advance their knowledge and clinical practice in glaucoma. The course aims to prepare clinicians to diagnose ocular hypertension, to make a preliminary diagnosis of chronic open angle glaucoma, and to monitor patients with diagnosed ocular hypertension (on treatment or in the absence of a management plan). The clinical placement aims to give students the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt during the taught sessions and to refine their clinical decision making in patients with or at risk of developing glaucoma.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants must be General Optical Council registered optometrists or other registered health professional and hold the College of Optometrists Professional Certificate in Glaucoma. Students enrolling on this course must have arranged a placement in a hospital glaucoma clinic under the mentorship of a consultant ophthalmologist. The placement must enable the student to gain experience of at least 150 cases. As a minimum guideline, one session (half day) per week for 6 months is recommended. This placement may commence any time after the initial practical workshop, though we highly recommend students complete as much of the taught component of the course as possible before commencing the placement.
