Program Outline
- MSEd in Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6 or Grades 5-12): This 30-credit program is designed for certified teachers who want to become literacy specialists. Students can choose to focus on one developmental level or complete both with additional study.
- MSEd in Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6) and Special Education (Birth-Grade 2 or Grades 1-6): This 47-54 credit dual program prepares certified teachers to meet the educational requirements for certification in literacy and special education.
- MA in Literacy Studies (Non-Certification): This 32-credit program prepares scholar-practitioners to work with students in various settings, including private and international schools, nonprofit organizations, and out-of-school resources.
- EdD/PhD in Literacy Studies: This doctoral program is designed for literacy researchers and teachers who work in universities, colleges, public schools, and community settings. Both the EdD and PhD programs consist of 60 credits of post-master's graduate coursework. PhD students must fulfill a second language requirement and an additional literacy research requirement.
- Advanced Certificate in Literacy Studies (Birth-Grade 6): This 27-credit program is designed for certified elementary and middle school teachers with a master's degree who want to pursue certification in literacy.
- Advanced Certificate in Literacy Studies (Grades 5-12): This 27-credit program is designed for certified middle and secondary school teachers with a master's degree who want to pursue certification in literacy.

- Develop exemplary teaching practices and conduct state-of-the-art literacy research.
- Provide students with hands-on experience through a 30-hour practicum at the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic on the Hofstra campus.

- Expert Faculty: Students learn from faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized for their research and scholarship in areas such as literacy development, reading and writing assessment and evaluation strategies, and bilingual/dual language education.
- Hands-on Experience: Students develop exemplary teaching practices and conduct state-of-the-art literacy research through a 30-hour practicum at the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic on the Hofstra campus.
- One-on-One Support: Students receive one-on-one support for mastering education technology and the integration of new media into their teaching.
- Engaging Events: Students deepen their education by engaging in author and scholar events and through Alpha Upsilon Alpha, the honor society of the International Literacy Association.
