The BA (Hons) Working and Teaching in the Early Years is a three-year full-time undergraduate degree that focuses on the principles of working with children from birth to seven years. The program aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to pursue a career in the early years sector.

What You'll Study

Year 1

• Healthy Child and Early Learning: This module explores the impact of health issues on the learning and development of babies and young children.
• Introduction to the Early Years Curriculum and Safeguarding: This module develops students' knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the key aspects of safeguarding.
• Teaching and Learning Through Play: This module equips students with an understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin early years pedagogy.
• The Child as a Competent Learner: Theoretical Perspectives: This module introduces students to the key theories, principles, processes, and concepts relating to the development of young children.
• Young Children in a Diverse Society: This module explores the key aspects of inclusive Early Years environments and the strategies employed by practitioners to ensure diverse needs are met.

Year 2

• Contemporary Issues in the Early Years: This module considers the specific challenges that young children might face during their lives in the UK and across the globe.
• Early Years Curriculum in Practice: This module enables students to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the Early Years curriculum and principles of teaching.
• Early Years Practitioners as Researchers: This module helps students understand and apply the key principles of academic research to different areas of the Early Years context.
• Inclusive Practice to Support SEND in the Early Years: This module promotes the importance of applying inclusive principles to specific categories of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
• Language and Communication in the Early Years: This module focuses on the role of language and communication within the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and Key Stage 1.

Year 3

• Educational Leadership in the Early Years: Research and Practice: This module explores the issues of educational leadership in the Early Years context.
• International Early Years Pedagogies: This module enables students to critically analyze multiple perspectives on the conceptualization of an early childhood pedagogy from a global dimension.
• Learning Beyond the Classroom: This module equips students with a critical awareness of the value that the arts, culture, and the environment bring to the early childhood and family experience.
• Researching Work Practice in the Early Years: This module enables students to critically demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through engagement with a small-scale research project based on an aspect of Early Years practice.
• Respectful Relationships with Families and Communities: This module equips students with advanced knowledge and understanding of working in collaboration with parents and Early Years practitioners.

Entry Criteria

• Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS Tariff points
• No specific subjects required
• GCSE English Language at Grade C or Grade 4 or above (or equivalent)
• Experience of working with children aged from birth to seven years in any context

Tuition Fees

• UK Full-Time: £9,535 per year
• International: £17,000 per year
