The BSMS Medical Degree Program is a five-year joint award program offered by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex that leads to a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (BM BS) degree. Students engage in various teaching methods and placements, culminating in intense clinical preparation in their fifth year, leading to successful career paths in medicine.

• Accreditation: Approved by the GMC under its Quality Assurance of Basic Medical Education (QABME) processes
• Objectives: To develop highly competent, motivated doctors committed to high standards of clinical practice, professionalism, and patient care.
Graduates will possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for a successful medical career.

Outline:

• Years 1-2:
• Primarily based at the Universities of Brighton and Sussex Falmer campuses.
• Utilize purpose-built teaching facilities including:
• Modern anatomy laboratory
• Small and large group teaching spaces
• Clinical science laboratories
• Years 3-4:
• Teaching year is extended.
• Ward-based placements at:
• Royal Sussex County Hospital
• Regional partner hospitals
• Year 5:
• Intense clinical and professional preparation for foundation years.
• Develop clinical skills through:
• Direct patient contact on clinical placements
• Clinical skills laboratories and simulators
• Focus on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients in various areas of practice.
• Intercalated Degrees:
• Optional addition to the medical degree.
• Can be undertaken between Years 3 and 4.
• Allows students to:
• Expand their horizons
• Study a new topic in depth
• Work or study for a year at BSMS or another university
• Number of intercalation places is capped at 40% of the total cohort, with priority given to those without a prior degree.
