The Theatre Teacher Certification program prepares students to sit for certification exams in theatre after graduation. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences encourages students to explore teaching as a career option.


Why Earn a Theatre Teacher Certification?

Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to sit for the certification examinations in theatre. Through studying theatre, students can acquire a diverse range of communication and organizational skills applicable to many careers.


Theatre Teacher Certification Highlights

  • The Department of Dance and Theatre maintains the University Theater and the Studio Theater, as well as technical facilities to support the annual season.
  • Qualified undergraduate students perform lead roles, direct public productions, stage-manage, and design scenery, costumes, lights, make-up, and wigs.
  • Students can combine their degree with studies in journalism or law to pursue careers as theatre critics or entertainment lawyers.
  • Students are often offered performance and design opportunities as part of outside professional projects of the faculty and can audition for local theatre groups.
  • UNT has several student organizations for students to network and further hone their skills and craft.
  • Scholarships are available based on merit and talent.

Theatre Teacher Certification Courses

  • Play Analysis (3 hrs)
    • Principles and techniques governing the preparation of plays and other theatrical events for performance, design, direction, and production.
    • Contemporary systems of script analysis.
    • Emphasis on theory and criticism of theatre arts.
  • Theatre for Young Audiences (3 hrs)
    • Recognition and examination of the history and philosophy, production, and performance of theatre for young audiences.
    • Focused inquiry on the practical problems that arise in the selection and performance of dramatic texts, original collective creations, and adaptation of selected literature.
    • Emphasis on connecting artistic practices and trends in educational theatre to theories of child/adolescent development.
  • Teaching/Learning Process and Evaluation (3 hrs)
    • Examines the processes of human learning and development as they relate to teaching in diverse EC–12 classroom settings.
    • Understanding of these processes is applied to lesson design, instructional strategies, and assessment.
  • Student Teaching in the Secondary School (3 hrs)
    • Prerequisite(s): With the exception of student teaching, all course work on the degree plan must be complete.
    • Senior standing and admission to teacher education are required.
    • The student must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Instructional Strategies and Classroom Management (3 hrs)
    • Taken during the semester immediately preceding student teaching, this course provides knowledge and skills required for organizing and directing various instructional strategies in the secondary classroom.
    • Content includes teaching strategies, approaches to classroom management and discipline, student motivation, student and teacher assessment and evaluation, and the use of media and technology in the classroom.
  • Theatre in the Classroom (3 hrs)
    • Theories and practical application of theatre in the classroom with children and adolescents.
    • Integrates the content area of theatre with educational pedagogy, with an emphasis on theatre games, improvisational play-making, story dramatization, and thematic work in educational and recreational settings.
