This entry-level qualification equips individuals with intellectual and learning disabilities with the skills and knowledge to participate in social, cultural, family, and community settings with supervision. The program includes courses on work practices, health and safety, communication, leisure skills, money management, cooking, community mobility, and self-development, with an elective course in work skills. Graduates may pursue careers as gardening assistants, supermarket workers, cleaners, and more.

This qualification is designed for individuals who require specialized support in their learning journey. It aims to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to manage their participation in social, cultural, family/whānau, and community settings, with supervision. The program encourages graduates to seek further skills and knowledge to enhance their educational and employment pathways.


Outline:

The program is delivered over a year, either full-time or part-time equivalent. It is offered at the New Plymouth campus and involves up to four days of on-campus learning per week.


Core Courses:

  • CSL1.001 Effective Work Practice: This course explores different work options and identifies factors contributing to a positive work environment, with support.
  • CSL1.004 Communication: This course aims to improve students' communication skills in various everyday situations, with support.
  • CSL1.005 Leisure Skills: This course explores ways to utilize leisure time, with support.
  • CSL1.006 Money Skills: This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to manage money in everyday situations, with support.
  • CSL1.007 Cooking: This course teaches students how to prepare and serve simple, nutritious meals and clean up afterward, with support.
  • CSL1.008 Community Mobility: This course equips students with the skills and knowledge to access and utilize facilities and resources within their immediate and wider community while maintaining personal safety, with support.
  • It also aims to expand their experiences and knowledge of the community and the world, with support.
  • CSL1.009 Self Development: This course explores strategies and ways to develop self-awareness, confidence, and personal goals, while ensuring the individual's health and well-being, with support.

Elective Course:

  • CSL1.010 Skills for Working (Year 2 Option): This course provides students with skills and knowledge to work in a new workplace, exercise care as an employee, identify factors contributing to work relationships and practices, explore work options, demonstrate timeliness, write and print a CV, with support.
