Program Overview


Introduction to the Pre-Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences Program

The Pre-Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (Pre-MIRS) Program at Jefferson is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in sciences and humanities, preparing them for success in upper-division courses in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences.

Program Structure

As a student in the Pre-MIRS Program, you will complete two years of pre-professional coursework with other pre-medical and health students on Jefferson's East Falls Campus. In the fall of your second year, you will select from five concentrations for Year 3, including:


  • MRI
  • Radiography
  • Abdomen-extended and Ob/Gyn Sonography
  • Cardiac Sonography
  • Vascular Sonography

Curriculum

Health Sciences Pre-Professional Curriculum

The curriculum includes the following hallmarks:


  • Pathways Seminar
  • American Visions
  • Writing Seminar I & II
  • Pre-Calculus/Introduction to Calculus
  • Diversity/Citizenship (2 courses)

The social and life sciences component includes:


  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Core Concepts in Biology with Lab
  • Chemistry I with Lab
  • Physics I & II
  • Anatomy and Physiology I & II with Lab

The health sciences component includes:


  • Introduction to Health Professions
  • Introduction to Health Care
  • Applied Statistics
  • Medical Terminology

An elective course is also available:


  • Free Elective (Optional)

All courses require a minimum "C" grade, and students must maintain an overall minimum 3.0 GPA and minimum 3.0 science GPA.


The Professional Phase

Students who maintain progression criteria are guaranteed to matriculate into the Professional Phase. The Professional Phase is full-time in Year 3 and Year 4, with classes, labs, and clinical experiences taking place Monday through Friday during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.


Concentrations prepare students for success in a specific area of technological practice. The options for Pre-MIRS Professional Phase concentrations include:


  • MRI
  • Radiography
  • Abdomen-extended and Ob/Gyn Sonography
  • Cardiac Sonography
  • Vascular Sonography

Academic Advising and Support

Jefferson's academic advisors and faculty work closely with students on course selection and academic performance to ensure that each student is on pace to transition into the professional phase of the program. All pre-professional phase students must attend advisement sessions as scheduled during Year 1 and Year 2.
