Program Overview
TRU's Welder program equips students with the knowledge and skills for entry-level welder positions in diverse industries. Led by experienced instructors, the program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience, preparing students for the SkilledTradesBC exam and further welding education. Upon completion, graduates can pursue apprenticeships or advanced certifications, fostering career opportunities in various sectors.
Program Outline
The program provides a comprehensive understanding of welding principles and practical skills.
Objectives:
- To equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for entry-level welding positions.
- To prepare students for the SkilledTradesBC Standardized written exam after Level 1 and Level 2.
Description:
The program combines classroom instruction and hands-on shop activities. Students learn theoretical principles of welding in the classroom and gain practical experience in the shop, mastering welding processes and skills.
Teaching:
- The program is taught by experienced instructors who are leaders in their field, holding Provincial Instructor Diplomas, Welding Inspector, or Metal Fabricator designations.
- The program utilizes a combination of classroom lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice in the shop.
Careers:
- Upon completion of the program, students are prepared for entry-level positions as apprentice welders in various industries.
Other:
- TRU has an exceptional legacy of producing students who have excelled in the workforce and at Provincial, National, and World Skills Competitions.
- All welding and fabrication equipment at TRU meets or exceeds industry standards.
- Students are required to supply their own gloves, jackets, goggles, helmet, and safety-toed boots.
- Tools will be advised on the first day of class.
- The program is offered at both the Kamloops and Williams Lake campuses.
- Students can gain 300 hours of credit towards the workplace-based training component of their apprenticeships.
- It is recommended that students gain 3,000 hours of hands-on field experience after completing the program before returning to school for Level 3 technical training.
- The program requires a minimum of Grade 10 in Math and English.
- Good vision, unimpaired hearing, respiration, and good health are recommended.
- A successful score on Accuplacer is required.
- A good command of the English language is recommended.
